You should make things again.
That is where EpicAgain begins.
Not with a perfectly mapped-out creative career. Not with some dramatic declaration that I have finally figured out what I’m supposed to be doing. Definitely not with a productivity system promising that waking up at 4:37 every morning will transform me into a creative machine.
EpicAgain begins with something much simpler:
I miss creating.
And I don’t think I’m finished yet.
What Is EpicAgain?
EpicAgain is a place about returning to creativity.
Writing. Building worlds. Learning things badly before learning them well. Designing. Making. Exploring ideas. Chasing strange questions. Picking up hobbies. Abandoning some of them. Becoming fascinated with something completely unexpected and disappearing down the rabbit hole for a while.
It is about trying to build a creative life inside an already-full life.
That distinction matters.
I’m not starting from a blank page.
There are responsibilities here. Work. Family. Coaching. Projects. Deadlines. People who need things. The assorted administrative barnacles that attach themselves to adulthood.
Creativity doesn’t get to arrive on a white horse and sweep all of that away.
It has to live among it.
So EpicAgain isn’t really about escaping ordinary life to become creative.
It is about figuring out how creativity becomes part of ordinary life again. That question is at the heart of my creative return and, really, the reason this entire project exists.
Why “EpicAgain”?
The name came from the feeling behind the project more than any grand ambition.
I wanted something that captured the idea of returning to things that once made life feel larger.
Stories.
Games.
Worlds.
Ideas.
Art.
Writing.
Making something simply because I wanted to know whether I could.
There was a time when that sort of curiosity came naturally. Before everything needed a business case. When hobbies weren’t side hustles. Every interest was quietly interrogated with the question:
“But what are you going to do with it?”
Maybe nothing.
I could build something ridiculous.
Maybe I’ll write a story nobody reads.
I’m board so I’ll paint tiny science-fiction soldiers for three hours and discover that choosing exactly the right shade of pink has become extremely important.
I might spend weeks inventing the political history of a civilization that has never existed.
That last one is particularly dangerous because once I start worldbuilding, apparently entire civilizations require economies, religions, wars, political grudges, technological systems, ancient catastrophes, and several thousand years of history before anyone is allowed to have a conversation.
Maybe one of those things becomes something bigger.
That’s part of what I want to recover here.
The freedom to make things before knowing what they’re for.
EpicAgain isn’t a declaration that everything I create will be epic.
It’s permission to go looking for that feeling again.
Starting a Creative Journey When You’re Not Really Starting
We tend to talk about creative journeys as beginnings.
“I’ve decided to become a writer.”
“I’m learning to paint.”
“I’m starting a new project.”
But returning to creativity feels different.
You don’t arrive empty-handed.
You bring old interests with you. Abandoned projects. Half-developed skills. Ideas written in notebooks you haven’t opened in years. Things you used to love before you became convinced you didn’t have enough time for them.
You also bring baggage.
Comparison.
Perfectionism.
The uncomfortable knowledge that there are twelve-year-olds on YouTube who are already better than you at the thing you’ve just decided to learn.
You remember what being good at something feels like, which makes being a beginner again particularly irritating.
That’s one of the things I want to explore through EpicAgain.
How do you become a beginner again without feeling like you’ve gone backward?
Because maybe you haven’t.
Maybe starting again at 30, 40, 50, or beyond isn’t the same as starting the first time.
You’ve accumulated something.
Taste.
Experience.
Patience.
Failures.
Responsibilities.
Stories.
You understand more about people. More about yourself. More about what matters and what absolutely does not.
Maybe the second beginning has tools the first one never did.
Creativity Doesn’t Always Disappear Dramatically
I don’t think most people consciously quit being creative.
There usually isn’t a ceremony.
Nobody stands over a trash can burning their sketchbooks while announcing, “From this day forward, I shall only answer emails.”
It happens quietly.
You stop writing for a few weeks.
The guitar stays in the case.
The camera stays on the shelf.
The project gets moved into a folder called Someday.
Something more urgent takes its place.
Then another thing does.
Eventually you begin describing yourself differently.
Instead of:
“I write.”
It becomes:
“I used to write.”
Instead of:
“I draw.”
It becomes:
“I was really into drawing when I was younger.”
Those are small linguistic funerals.
And sometimes we don’t notice we’re holding them.
The strange thing is that the desire often survives long after the habit disappears.
That’s the signal I mentioned earlier.
It keeps broadcasting.
I Don’t Want EpicAgain to Pretend This Is Easy
There is a version of creative advice online where every problem can apparently be solved by waking up earlier, buying a nicer notebook, and believing in yourself aggressively enough.
I don’t find that particularly useful.
Making time to create is hard.
Finishing things is hard.
Being terrible at something new is uncomfortable.
Putting creative work in front of other people can be even worse.
Sometimes inspiration doesn’t arrive, you make time and still waste it.
Other times you spend two hours working on something only to realize the version from yesterday was better.
As I get older life simply wins that week and the things I’d love to do never happen.
One of the things I want to figure out here is how to make time to create without pretending jobs, families, obligations, exhaustion, and normal adult life have suddenly vanished.
I want to write about that part too.
EpicAgain will document the process while it is happening, including the parts that don’t fit neatly inside a motivational quote.
What am I learning?
Is this working?
What am I struggling with?
How did I try but still failed spectacularly?
What am I building?
How am I finding time for creative work without pretending everything else has disappeared?
I’ll be collecting those lessons in What I’m Learning, along with the things I discover through writing, building, experimenting, reading, making, and inevitably getting some things wrong.
That is what the Creative Journey section of this site is for.
Not the polished biography written after everything succeeds.
The field notes from the middle.
What I’m Creating
One reason I wanted EpicAgain instead of a site devoted to a single hobby is that my brain has never behaved particularly well inside those fences.
I like too many things.
So you’ll find different kinds of creative work here.
There will for sure be:
- Writing
- Fiction and Worldbuilding
- Experiments with design and technology
- Hobbies I’ve fallen into with entirely unreasonable enthusiasm
There will be things I’m learning simply because they caught my attention.
Some interests may become permanent parts of the site.
Others may burn brightly for three months and vanish into the cosmic debris field.
That’s okay.
I don’t want EpicAgain to become another machine I have to feed.
I want it to remain a place where curiosity is allowed to wander.
The connecting thread isn’t the medium.
It’s the act of making something.
I’ll also share the behind-the-scenes process of building EpicAgain itself, because creating the place where I document the creative journey has unexpectedly become part of the creative journey.
Learning in Public
There’s another experiment hidden inside this project.
I want to become more comfortable sharing things before I’ve mastered them.
That is surprisingly difficult.
The internet encourages us to present finished identities.
Writer.
Designer.
Painter.
Expert.
Coach.
Creator.
But most interesting things happen before those labels fit comfortably.
There’s a long stretch where you are simply someone trying, learning, making ugly first versions, asking embarrassingly basic questions, and discovering that a technique you’ve been attempting for three days has a name and thousands of people already know how to do it.
That stage gets edited out of a lot of what we see online.
I want some of it to stay visible here.
If I am learning something, I’ll share what I’m learning.
My goal is if I’m building something, I’ll show pieces of the process.
If my thinking changes, the old thinking doesn’t necessarily need to disappear.
A creative journey should leave footprints.
That’s also why I’ll be keeping monthly creative progress updates. Not because every month needs to produce some spectacular milestone, but because small progress is incredibly easy to forget when you’re standing inside it.
The Goal Isn’t to Become More Productive
This might be the most important distinction.
I don’t want creativity to become another productivity metric.
I have enough metrics.
There is already plenty of life organized around outputs, goals, schedules, deadlines, performance, optimization, and whether the little progress bar has moved sufficiently to the right.
Creativity can produce things.
I hope it does.
Books.
Stories.
Projects.
Designs.
Maybe eventually things I haven’t imagined yet.
But I don’t want output to be the only measure.
There is value in becoming curious again, in getting absorbed in something, and in having an idea follow you around all day.
There is value in learning a skill nobody is paying you to learn or making something slightly ridiculous because creating it made Wednesday better.
That counts.
Writing Again
Writing will be one of the major threads running through EpicAgain.
Some of that will be articles like this one: thinking out loud, documenting the process, and trying to make sense of creativity while I’m in the middle of rebuilding it.
Some of it will be much stranger.
I’ll be sharing writing updates as projects develop, including the messy middle between having an idea and somehow convincing thousands of words to cooperate with it.
And eventually there will be actual stories.
The fictional worlds I’m building aren’t supposed to remain permanently trapped in outlines, notes, timelines, faction documents, and sprawling lore files. The goal is to turn some of those ideas into original short fiction and let the worlds finally start breathing on the page.
That’s both exciting and mildly terrifying.
Which probably means it’s worth doing.
Maybe You Are Starting Again Too
I’m building EpicAgain around my creative journey, but I suspect the feeling behind it isn’t unique.
Maybe you have something you’ve been meaning to return to.
Maybe it’s writing.
Painting.
Woodworking.
Photography.
Music.
Game design.
Miniatures.
Gardening.
Coding.
Drawing comics.
Building a fantasy world nobody else knows exists.
Maybe you don’t even know what the thing is yet.
You just know something feels missing.
If so, perhaps the first step isn’t dramatic.
You don’t need to reinvent your life this weekend.
It doesn’t even mean you need new equipment.
You don’t need a brand or permission from an algorithm.
You probably just need to make something.
Badly, if necessary.
Small enough that it actually gets made.
Then make another thing.
See what happens.
What You’ll Find on EpicAgain
Over time, this site will grow into a collection of the things I’m making, learning, questioning, and rediscovering.
Some articles will be practical.
Others will be deeply nerdy.
Some will document projects.
And at times we will explore creativity itself.
Some will disappear into fictional universes thousands of years from now.
Others will be about the mundane mechanics of finding forty-five minutes to work on something when the calendar appears to have declared war.
The categories will change and grow as the project does.
That’s intentional.
EpicAgain isn’t supposed to begin finished.
Neither am I.
This Is the Beginning
There’s always a temptation with a new project to make the first thing profound.
To explain the grand vision.
To predict what everything will become.
I don’t actually know.
That’s part of why I’m excited about it.
I know I want to write again, I want to make things.
I want to follow ideas further than practicality normally allows.
Oddly enough I want to become a beginner at things.
To finish projects that currently exist only as scattered notes or mental thoughts.
I want to build strange worlds.
To document what I’m learning, and hope others might try it themselves.
I want to see whether creativity can become a normal part of life instead of something permanently scheduled for someday.
So this is the first marker on the trail.
Not a manifesto carved into stone.
More like a beacon.
A signal sent outward.
And maybe inward too.
The creative journey isn’t over.
It’s time to make things again.
